Algeria and Morocco were French colonies in North Africa at the start of World War II. Algeria was occupied by Nazi Germany early in the War, conquered by the Africa Corps led by “The Desert Fox,” Field Marshal Erwin Rommel. On November 8th, 1942, Operation Torch was launched by the Allies to liberate Algeria, led by British and American troops, the latter commanded by General George S. Patton. It was one of the first major engagements for United States troops during World War II, and first American victory over Nazi Germany. This note, in Near Mint condition, was issued by the Banque De Algeria just eight days after Operation Torch, making it a historic World War II currency note. Save for very slight corner wear, this 80-year-old note would have graded Mint or Mint +.
