They were arguably the two most tumultuous decades in American political history, the 1960’s and ‘70’s. President John F. Kennedy, the youngest and first Catholic President in American history, was tragically gunned down by an assassin’s bullets in 1963. He remains the most popular President in history according to public opinion polls. His successor, Lyndon B. Johnson, initiated the Great Society domestic programs, but escalated the Vietnam War and was spurned by his own party in 1968. Johnson’s successor, Richard M. Nixon resigned in disgrace in August 1974 after the Watergate break-in and subsequent coverup – the first President to voluntarily leave office. President Gerald Rudolph Ford succeeded Nixon, serving as the first unelected President. After being nominated as Vice President following the departure of indicted (and later convicted) criminal Spiro Agnew, Ford assumed the Presidency during the darkest days post-Watergate. Outsider Jimmy Carter was then elected, promising he would “never tell a lie.” After both domestic and foreign policy setbacks, Carter served but one term and suffered the largest electoral defeat in history, to Ronald Regan. Offered here is a rare historical artifact, original campaign buttons for all five Presidents, including their running mates, presented in a dark walnut frame with custom patriotic background (16.5” H X 13.75” W).
