In late December of 2003, the perennial power Virginia Tech Hokies squared off against the Cal Bears at the retractable roof baseball stadium in downtown Phoenix, AZ, Bank One Ballpark (now Chase Field). Before a near-capacity crowd of 43,000, game MVP Aaron Rodgers – yes, that Aaron Rodgers – completed twenty-seven passes for 394 yards and two touchdowns in rallying the Bears to an upset victory, 52 – 49. The winning score was tallied by Cal kicker Tyler Fredrickson, a 35-yard field goal as time expired. Aaron Rodgers went on to play one more season for Cal, while Virginia Tech standouts DeAngelo Hall and Kevin Jones were Number One draft picks the following spring.
