The last year of issue for the Ben Franklin half dollar was 1963, as John F. Kennedy’s assassination gave birth to a new American fifty cent piece in February of 1964. The Franklin half dollars, though prized and beloved, were quickly retired in early 1964 when the Kennedy half dollars were released.
